DC Universe Unveiled and It’s Everything We Were Hoping For

I don’t normally talk about news here on the site, but this is a big one that was so relevant to what we do here, that I couldn’t pass it up.

After months of teasing, DC Entertainment has finally unveiled their plans for DC Universe, and it’s basically everything we were hoping for.

Not only is it a streaming platform for DC’s large library of television and film, but it’s also DC’s answer to Marvel Unlimited, aka a Netflix for comics. Add to that the fact that it’s also going to be a place where you can buy exclusive merchandise and connect with other fans through forums. I’m not sure what form these will take, nor am I that interested in that side of things to be honest, but it’s cool to see a Netflix-like service that does so much more than the basics.

Ever since DC announced that they were doing DC Universe, we’ve been speculating whether it would include comics as part of their platform, and it’s true! Though they do say that the selection is curated, so Marvel Unlimited could still win points for the selection, but it’s impossible to say at this point. Marvel Unlimited is curated as well, but it’s library is so enormous that most wouldn’t care.

If you need additional incentive to sign up, look no further than the exclusive shows they have coming up, including Titans, Young Justice: Outsides, Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn, and Swamp Thing. Heck, I’d be in with just Young Justice alone (can you tell if I’m going to get this thing?). You can bet that we’ll be adding what we can to our timelines, and be sure to check out our DC Hub, which is likely to be updated a lot once this comes out.

There’s no word yet about a release date or a price tag, but I’d estimate within the $12-15 range, though with this many features it could be more. I’d prepare yourself to expect it to be more. Marvel Unlimited is $10 and that’s just comics alone. Add the other features with DC Universe and I’d expect a price hike. There will also be a beta, launching in August. Fingers crossed I get picked for that.

I’m personally really excited, this is really new ground when it comes to more subscription services. It’s rare to see one that includes more than just one type of media. Let the capitalism wars begin! Your move, Disney.
