Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Timeline

When it first aired on BBC radio, no one would have believed how much Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy would resonate with audiences. Though not an enormous science fiction universe, it is one of the most beloved, and the title book frequently makes lists of the top science fiction books of all time. This is the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy timeline!

What’s on the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Timeline?

This is the unofficial Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy timeline, pulled from the series created by Douglas Adams. This includes the radio plays, the novels, and the works produced after Adams’ death.

The series is hailed as one of the best sci-fi series of all time. Eoin Colfer was selected to finish Douglas Adams’ series with a sixth book, though there doesn’t appear to be any plans in the works to further continue the series with Colfer.

And while there have been adaptations over the years (some of which are included here), few have managed to capture the true magic that can really only be experienced through the books and audio plays.

Where to Start?

For once, this is a difficult question. There are two good places to start (don’t start with the film like I did). The first would be the original radio play. It was, after all, the thing that started it all. Even the book was based on it, rather than what is usually the other way around. The other starting place would be the first book, which really is a masterpiece of fiction.
