Pariah tells the story of Soren-066, a Spartan who was one of a dozen unfortunate candidates who washed out of the program due to complications arising from the biological enhancements, and the struggles he faced afterwards. It was written by B.K. Evenson.
“Pariah” by B. K. Evenson, is actually a very enjoyable short story. It covers elements of the Halo universe that wouldn’t normally be covered in a novel, comic, or video game, namely what happened to the Spartans who became deformed due to the human augmentation procedures. The short does a remarkable job of getting into the background and psyche of the character in few pages. The story was easy to get into and identify with. Additionally the action is well paced and keeps the reader engaged. The ending was also enjoyable leaving the plot open for a continuation of the character’s story (though that may or may not happen). Overall, this is one of my favorite shorts in Evolutions.
