The first scene shows the chief as he explains to his followers the plan of the great train robbery. Two masked robbers enter and compel the operator to stop the approaching train. They make him write an order to the engineer to take water at this station instead of at the regular watering stop.
I personally loved watching this short. Obviously by today’s standards it’s not much to go with, but I can just imagine the suspense experienced by the audiences of the day. It’s fast paced, it’s action-packed, and it’s really not all that bad. It’s also considered the father of the western genre, so we really do owe it a lot. The final shot of one of the gunman firing point blank at the camera was chilling, and was probably very moving at the time. It’s also suggested to be the inspiration for the famous James Bond shot at the camera. I highly recommend checking out this important piece of film history.
